About Hornerville

A Living Fantasy World Built for Real Life

Hornerville is a shared fantasy role-playing game where players create characters, make meaningful choices, and shape a living world together.

At the center of that world is Hornerville itself: a peaceful village surrounded by dangerous roads, forgotten ruins, hidden kingdoms, ancient threats, and stories waiting to unfold.

What began as a game between two friends slowly grew into something much larger.

Every map, board, adventure, character, rule, item, location, and piece of lore was created from scratch. Much of Hornerville was built during a difficult chapter of my life, including time spent in prison, when imagination became a way to create freedom where there was very little of it.

Hornerville survived that chapter. Then it kept growing.

Today, it exists so other people can gather around a story, escape into another world for a while, and create memories together.

What Is Hornerville?

Hornerville is a tabletop fantasy role-playing game and living world.

Players create characters, explore the world, complete quests, fight enemies, form alliances, uncover secrets, and build reputations through the choices they make.

The person guiding the world is called the Worldkeeper.

The Worldkeeper describes what the players see, controls the people and creatures they encounter, and decides how the world responds to their actions. The Worldkeeper is not there to defeat the players or protect them from every consequence.

Their responsibility is to keep the world alive, fair, and responsive.

Hornerville is not a story with only one correct path.

Players may become heroes, criminals, hunters, merchants, explorers, protectors, conquerors, or something no one expected. Their choices may change individual lives, entire settlements, or the future of the world itself.

The Hornerville Philosophy

Most fantasy worlds try to tell you who your character is before the adventure even begins.

Hornerville does not.

There are no races born evil.

There are no classes destined to become heroes.

There is no alignment system telling you how your character must behave.

You decide who your character becomes.

Every promise can be kept or broken. Every enemy can become an ally. Every friend can become a rival. A feared creature may show mercy, while a respected hero may reveal something darker.

The world remembers what you do, not what your character sheet claims you are.

Blood may shape you.

History may influence you.

Power may tempt you.

But only your choices define you.

Your reputation is not selected during character creation.

It is earned.

Hornerville is also built on the understanding that conflict between characters should remain part of the story. Betrayals, rivalries, alliances, victories, and defeats belong inside the game—not between the people playing it.

Characters may become enemies while the players continue creating the story together.

The goal is not simply to win.

The goal is to create an adventure people will remember.

A World That Remembers

Hornerville is designed as a living world.

Choices have consequences.

A person you rescue may return years later. A merchant you rob may refuse to serve you again. A village you protect may honor your name. An enemy you spare may become an ally—or return when you least expect it.

The world does not reset after every adventure.

Characters leave marks behind.

Retired heroes may become legends, rulers, travelers, villains, or mysterious strangers encountered by future players. Fallen characters may become part of history. Abandoned roads may remain dangerous until someone finally clears them.

Even when one adventure ends, the world continues.

Made for Real Life

Traditional tabletop games often require everyone to gather in the same place for several uninterrupted hours.

Hornerville can be played that way, but it does not have to be.

The game supports both traditional and hybrid play.

A group may gather around a table with character sheets, dice, boards, maps, and miniatures. Players may also use phones, tablets, or computers to access the game, manage information, and continue the story when meeting in person is difficult.

Turns and decisions can unfold over time.

A player can respond when they are available, and the story can continue without demanding that everyone stop their life at the same moment.

Hornerville can be played:

  • At home
  • At the beach
  • While camping
  • During a road trip
  • At a friend’s house
  • Across long distances
  • Almost anywhere you can access your device

The world travels with you.

Why Hornerville Exists

Hornerville exists because games can be more than entertainment.

They can give people a place to belong.

They can create friendships, challenge the imagination, and give people something meaningful to build together.

They can also provide an escape during times when life feels limited, difficult, or overwhelming.

Hornerville was created from a desire to make that experience available to other people—not only experienced role-players, but also newcomers, families, friends, and anyone who wants to step into a world where their decisions matter.

You do not need expensive equipment.

You do not need years of experience.

You do not need to memorize hundreds of pages before beginning.

You need imagination, a willingness to participate, and people who want to tell a story together.

A Free World

Hornerville is intended to remain free for as long as I am able to build, host, and maintain it.

The goal is not to place the world behind a wall.

The goal is to open the gates.

Everything presented on the official Hornerville website represents the current version of the game. As the world grows, rules may be clarified, locations may expand, and new adventures may become available.

Hornerville will continue to change because living worlds are never truly finished.

Enter the World

The roads beyond Hornerville are open.

Some lead to wealth.

Some lead to danger.

Some lead to places no one has returned from.

Who your character becomes will not be decided by race, class, prophecy, or alignment.

It will be decided by what you do when the road turns dark.

Welcome to Hornerville.

Only your choices define you.
